Anton Walkes, a 25-year-old English defender for Charlotte FC, has died.

Miami Herald detailed that Walkes received CPR from Miami Fire Rescue Wednesday but died early Thursday.

‘We are heartbroken from the loss of Anton Walkes, a truly incredible father, loving person, and outstanding human being,’ Charlotte’s sporting director Zoran Krneta said in a statement.

‘Anton embodied what it meant to be a part of Charlotte Football Club, and our entire community is in mourning as a result of this tragedy.

‘The impact he had in the locker room and throughout Charlotte will not be forgotten. We are thinking of his lovely family during this difficult time and will support them in any way we can.’

Major League Soccer expressed their sorrow at the ‘tragic’ news of Walkes’ death early Thursday, following an accident in South Florida, in their own statement.

‘There are no words to describe the sadness felt by everyone in Major League Soccer today following the tragic death of Anton Walkes of Charlotte FC,’ read the statement.

‘Anton was a talented and dedicated player who was well-liked by both his teammates and the fans. Our hearts go out to his partner, family, friends, and the entire Charlotte FC family.

Walkes made his professional debut in 2016 and began his career at Tottenham Hotspur’s academy in England.

From there, he had loan spells with Atlanta United and Portsmouth before signing permanent contracts with both clubs.

Walkes was selected by Charlotte in the expansion draft on December 14, 2021.
