Theodora Midgley: Girl, 2, rushed to hospital after suddenly going blind due to 'extreme infection'

A two-year-old girl had to be rushed to hospital after the youngster suddenly went blind.

Theodora Midgley was having a typical day in November last month when she began complaining about her inability to see.

The young girl had a “weird episode” that caused her to lose her sight completely, terrifying her parents.

He had been working almost 40 miles away in Hull at the time but raced to the hospital where medics began running a number of tests on the youngster in an effort to find out what was wrong.

The young girl’s sight was eventually regained but she has been left shaken by the episode.

Recalling the horrific incident, Joe told GrimsbyLive : “It was at the end of November this year when I got a call from Theodora’s mum telling me she was going to Grimsby hospital and that I needed to get there as soon as possible. I was working in Hull when she rang, but got there as quick as I could.

“I was told she’d been having a weird episode where she lost her sight and couldn’t see a thing.

“We were just doing all we could to keep her calm. She had another couple of moments where she couldn’t see anything and that’s when they decided to keep her in.

“I have to say, they were absolutely fantastic with us too. They did every test you could think of, which, for a 2-year-old, was horrific as they were quite invasive.”

One of the scans picked up some abnormalities on her brain, but Joe said they were told medics thought it was some kind of infection which caused the sudden blindness.

Speaking to GrimsbyLive he added: “The whole thing was horrific though. We weren’t sure what was going to happen, but the doctors and nurses really helped to take away our worries.”

Even though Theodora has her sight back, Joe said the incident has affected her since.

He explained: “She’s completely lost her appetite bless her and she’s much more anxious about going out anywhere now. However, we’re hoping that we can have a lovely Christmas and get her back to the way she was in time.”

Theodora is now hoping to raise £1,000 for the children’s ward where she stayed

To say thanks to those that helped Theodora, the family are hosting a charity event at Hill House Equestrian Centre in Market Rasen.

They’re hoping to raise £1,000 through a raffle and Just Giving page to be able to provide the Children’s Ward with new equipment.

The event will be held on Saturday, 11 February, 2023 and will consist of various Horsemanship demonstrations, part of Joe’s profession.

He said: “We’re hoping that by getting them some money we can alleviate some of the pressure the NHS is under right now.”
